Energy Consumption and the Pace of Life: Finding the Sustainable Balance
Education Space
Learning pathway summary
This course invites you to look beyond the convenience of modern life and explore the hidden energy costs of speed. Modern society operates on a simple premise: faster is always better. We drive faster to save five minutes on a commute, demand same-day delivery for routine purchases, and run industrial manufacturing at maximum output. However, this relentless pursuit of speed comes with a steep, often hidden cost paid in Joules rather than Euros or dollars.
By treating daily routines as physical systems, you will learn to quantify the energetic impact of everyday choices, distinguish between time saved and energy wasted, and identify practical ways to achieve a more sustainable balance. Through real-world examples, you will analyse activities such as commuting, household tasks, heating, and consumption habits using fundamental physical principles.
The course examines how changes in speed, thermal comfort, and service expectations influence energy demand. You will evaluate time-versus-energy trade-offs, calculate energy footprints across different scenarios, and explore strategies for reducing energy consumption without compromising quality of life.
By the end of the course, you will be equipped with practical tools to assess everyday routines through a physical lens and make more informed decisions that balance efficiency, convenience, and sustainability.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
- identify technologies capable of meeting the energy and power requirements of everyday activities, including electricity, hydrogen, and biofuels, while recognising their limitations related to land use and material availability;
- analyse the current dependence on fossil fuels in daily life activities and compare fossil fuel consumption with alternative energy sources across different applications;
- evaluate available sustainable energy sources and match them to the specific energy and power requirements of commonly used energy systems;
- analyse and evaluate the energy requirements of different daily life activities, assessing their environmental impact in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution;
- make informed decisions that support more efficient and sustainable patterns of energy use.
